**Understanding PEPs and PIPs**

During registration, you'll be asked to declare whether you are a Politically Exposed Person (PEP), a Prominent Influential Person (PIP), or a family member or close associate of someone who falls into these categories.

If you're unsure about these classifications, the explanations below will help clarify.

**What is a DPEP (Domestic Politically Exposed Person)?**

A DPEP is an individual who currently occupies, or has previously occupied (including in an acting capacity for longer than 6 months), a prominent public position within South Africa. This includes:

* The President or Deputy President\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Cyril Ramaphosa serves as President of South Africa*
* National Ministers or their Deputies\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Enoch Godongwana holds the position of Minister of Finance*
* Provincial Premiers\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane is the Premier of the Eastern Cape*
* Members of Provincial Executive Councils\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Saki Mokoena is the MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Free State*
* Executive Mayors at municipal level\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Geordin Hill-Lewis is the Executive Mayor of Cape Town*
* Political party leaders\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: John Henry Steenhuisen leads the Democratic Alliance*
* Royal family members or senior traditional leaders\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Makhosonke Enoch Mabena is King of the AmaNdebele nation*
* Senior financial officers in national or provincial government departments\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Head Accounting Officers or Chief Financial Officers such as Gavin Pratt in Limpopo's Provincial Treasury*
* Municipal Managers or Chief Financial Officers at local government level\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Sibusiso Mkhize formerly served as Municipal Manager of OR Tambo District Municipality*
* Senior executives of public entities listed under Schedules 2 or 3 of the Public Finance Management Act, 1999\
  \&#xNAN;*This includes Chairpersons, CEOs, Accounting Authorities, CFOs, or Chief Investment Officers - for instance, André Marinus de Ruyter previously served as CEO of Eskom*
* Leadership positions in municipal entities\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Tshifularo Mashava is CEO of City Power*
* Judges, including Constitutional Court Justices\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Owen Lloyd Rogers sits on the Constitutional Court*
* Foreign diplomatic representatives based in South Africa\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Paolo Cuculi represents Italy as Ambassador to South Africa*
* High-ranking military officers (above Major-General)\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Rudzani Maphwanya is Chief of the South African National Defence Force*

**What is an FPEP (Foreign Politically Exposed Person)?**

An FPEP is someone who holds or has held a prominent public position in any country outside South Africa, including:

* Heads of State or Government\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Joe Biden is President of the United States*
* Foreign royalty\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: William Arthur Philip Louis is the Prince of Wales in the United Kingdom*
* Senior government officials, ministers, or political party leaders\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Eric Molale is Botswana's Minister of Infrastructure Development*
* Senior judges or judicial officials\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: John Glover Jr. Roberts is Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court*
* Top executives at state-owned corporations\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Puleng Lebitsa chairs the board of Lesotho Communications Authority*
* Senior military leadership\
  \&#xNAN;*Example: Mojalefa Exavery holds the rank of Lieutenant General in the Lesotho Defense Force*

**What is a PIP (Prominent Influential Person)?**

A PIP is someone who currently holds, or held within the last 12 months, a senior position at a company that supplies goods or services to government entities, where the total annual value of those transactions exceeds the threshold set by the Minister of Finance. Qualifying positions include:

* Board Chairperson or Audit Committee Chairperson
* Executive Officer
* Chief Financial Officer

This designation applies to companies with government contracts, tenders, or significant public sector business relationships.
